Undergraduate studies in the Department of Primary Education last four (4) years and are divided into eight (8) academic semesters. According to the 2025 Study Program, during their undergraduate studies, students are required to successfully complete thirty-one (31) compulsory courses and fifteen (15) elective courses and, in addition, a foreign language (English, French, German). In the eighth (8th) semester, students have the option of completing a Thesis, which is equivalent to two elective courses in the eighth semester.
Since the academic year 2003/04, the Second Cycle of Studies has been offering postgraduate studies (for more details see “Postgraduate Studies”).
Since February 1998, the Department of Primary Education and the Department of Education Sciences in Early Childhood have formed the School of Education (Government Gazette No. 37/27.2.1998). The School was established to meet the operational and developmental needs of the two Departments of Education. Since 2023, the newly established Department of Psychology, based in Didymoteicho city, has also been incorporated into the School.
Rapid developments in the field of education internationally over recent decades have necessitated an upgrade of the mission of Education Departments, which now are called upon to contribute to the formation of the scientific and professional identity of students and future educators as specialists in learning and teaching, education and training, as reflective educators, aware of their social role and critical of their work and the conditions that influence it.
The Department of Primary Education is the “historical continuation” of the “Zarifeios” Pedagogical Academy of Alexandroupolis, which operated from 1933 as a continuation of the Alexandroupolis Teaching Academy.
The History of the Zarifeios Pedagogical Academy of Alexandroupolis is recorded in 1978 in an album edited by its director, Nikolaos Raptis.
