Student Advocate
The “Student Advocate” is an institution that was established by Law 4009/2011 and was set up at Democritus University of Thrace by Government Gazette 98/vol. B/24-01-2019.
Purpose
- Mediation between students and professors or administrative services of the University.
- Compliance with the law within the framework of academic freedom,
- Ensuring the smooth operation of the University.
The Student Advocate may be a professor or emeritus professor of Democritus University of Thrace and is appointed by the Senate, following consultation with the Student Welfare Council.
Responsibilities
He/she investigates cases, either on its own initiative or following a report by a student, and mediates with the competent bodies of the Institution for their resolution.
- He/she may request from the Institution’s services any information, document, or other evidence relating to the case, examine persons, conduct an autopsy, and order an expert opinion.
- If he/she finds that legality has not been observed in a specific case, that there are instances of maladministration or that the smooth operation of the Institution is being disrupted, he/she shall draw up a report which shall communicate to the professor concerned or the competent administrative service and the student who submitted the report, and shall mediate in any appropriate manner to resolve the problem.
- He/she may, by his own decision, file a report that is deemed to be manifestly vague, unfounded, or unsubstantiated, while if he/she considers that there are indications of a disciplinary offense, he shall refer the case to the competent disciplinary body.
The Student Advocate has no authority over matters relating to student examinations and grading.
