Ecclesiastical Museum

The Ecclesiastical Museum of the Cathedral of Alexandroupolis was founded in 1976. It was initially housed in two halls of the Cultural Center of the Cathedral, next to the church of St. Nicholas. In 1982, the collection, enriched with other relics, was transferred to the “Leontarideios School” which had been declared a preserved monument since 1978. The Museum’s collection, which was divided into eight sections, corresponding to the number of halls available, includes more than 400 ecclesiastical art relics: icons, sacred vessels, priestly vestments, wood carvings, and old prints. These objects come from the sensitive area around the two banks of the Evros River and date from the 16th to the 20th century.
